Why is it crucial to use permalink URLs when saving, citing, and sharing digital materials?

Answer

Permalinks must be used to access previously discovered content without repeating a search. Library users who instead rely on copied or bookmarked web addresses directly from their internet browser’s address bar will likely encounter access errors that will not allow for a return to content.

When faculty share permalinks in their Canvas courses so that students can access materials directly (rather than PDFs), this allows our library to collect accurate usage statistics on frequently used materials. Accurate usage data allows our librarians to make informed decisions when subscription renewals and collection development occur.

By sharing permalinks in their courses, faculty will also be providing students with access to built-in accessibility tools and annotation functions and content that may undergo or have undergone updates. This also assists the library in meeting the licensing requirements set by our database subscription agreements.
